چکیده
a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: P-wave microseism travel-time anomaly body-wave tomography storm Array analysis of seismic noise has the potential to be very useful in improving body-wave tomography of Earth structure, just as noise cross-correlation methods have recently proven successful in surface-wave tomography. Beamforming of seismic noise recorded in southern California reveals P-wave arrivals from distant storms in open oceans. In this case, the noise can be processed using cross-correlation among different station pairs and optimal P-wave relative arrival times can be estimated using the same approach traditionally used to analyze earthquake arrival times. Using three storms in the Gulf of Mexico, the Western Pacific (near Japan), and the South Pacific (near Fiji) respectively, we demonstrate that travel-time anomalies can be obtained from P waves generated by a distant storm, and that they are similar to those obtained from using an earthquake close to the storm. Our results suggest using oceanic storms as additional seismic sources for resolving P-wave travel-time anomalies.

Improving Microseismic PWave Source LocationWith Multiple Seismic Arrays
Using array analysis, the direction and distance to a seismic P wave source can be determined. However, individual arrays are limited in their geographical coverage and by their resolving capability, which is determined by the array aperture, configuration, and number of stations. We demonstrate these limitations on three large seismic arrays located in Japan, Europe, and California, and find t...
متن کاملMonitoring remote ocean waves using P-wave microseisms
Oceanic microseisms are generated by the interaction of opposing ocean waves and subsequent coupling with the seabed, so microseisms should contain information on the ocean conditions that generated them. This leads to the possibility of using seismic records as a proxy for the ocean gravity wavefield. Here we investigate the P-wave component of microseisms, which has previously been linked to ...
متن کاملPossible chemical modification of oceanic lithosphere by hotspot magmatism: Seismic evidence from the junction of Ninetyeast Ridge and the Sumatra–Andaman arc
Tomograms of the upper mantle, which represent perturbations in P-wave, shear wave speed, and bulk-sound speed, image the Indo-Australian plate subducting beneath the Eurasian plate along the Sumatra–Andaman arc. The detailed images of the subducting slab are well constrained by the large number of intermediate depth earthquakes and moderate seismic station coverage along the entire Indonesian–...
متن کاملJoint inversion of ReMi dispersion curves and refraction travel times using particle swarm optimization algorithm
Shear-wave velocity ( ) is an important parameter used for site characterization in geotechnical engineering. However, dispersion curve inversion is challenging for most inversion methods due to its high non-linearity and mix-determined trait. In order to overcome these problems, in this study, a joint inversion strategy is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The ...
متن کاملMantle anisotropy beneath the Tibetan Plateau: evidence from long-period surface waves
We investigate long-period surface waves (T> 100 s) propagating across the Tibetan Plateau, based on the seismic records from a PASSCAL portable array and nearby Chinese Digital Seismic Network (CDSN) stations. Significant quasi-Love waveform anomalies, associated with fundamental Rayleigh-Love coupling, are consistently observed, suggesting that strong lateral gradients in azimuthal anisotropy...
